What's included with the Original Phlatprinter Kit?
What additional items are needed to complete the Original Phlatprinter?
- Dremel Cutting Tool
- Electronics (3 Axis Driver Board, 3 Stepper Motors, Power Supply)
- Hardware Store, washers, nuts, bushing, spacers, hinges, U-bolt, cutting bit, etc.
- Hardware Store, rods, all thread, iron pipe, wire, plugs, end caps, plastic pipe
- Hardware Store, plastic pipe, safety tape, power strip, glue, etc.
What software is used with the Original Phlatprinter?
- The software we use to design our models is the FREE
version of Google SketchUp.
- Then, we use the FREE Google SketchUp plug in,
SketchUcam (plug in designed for use with the Phlatprinter), to generate the
g-code (code the machine reads).
- From there, the g-code must be run through Control
Software. There are several FREE options available (EMC2 has been popular). An
alternative would be Mach3 – $175 – connects through a parallel port (our build
log videos walk you through using Mach3). Or you can choose to use the CNC USB
board – $180 - which will allow you to connect through your USB port and it
includes the necessary control software.

The cost to build the Phlatprinter may vary based on your choices and local pricing. A rough estimate would be $600-$700. This estimate includes the price of the Original Phlatprinter Kit, your electronics, and hardware store parts. If you choose to purchase control software or the CNC USB board, the cost would increase by that amount.
